Saint Emilion
This beautiful hilltop city is a short 45 minute drive from the downtown city center of Bordeaux. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with fascinating Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets. It also happens to be one of the principle red wine regions of Bordeaux. Since we were driving up to the Dordogne region, Saint Emilion made a perfect halfway point and stop for lunch. Many of the wine sellers offer free tastings and you have the ability to purchase any bottle (or two) to take with you. Wines from this region have a higher concentrate of the Merlot grape and are very tasty!
